Achievements so far
Initiation of the cause
On February 5, 2015, Don Pep Adrover Vallbona, Chancellor of the Diocese of Mallorca, read the official document as the first step towards the canonization and beatification cause of Eduardo Bonnín Aguiló.
The event took place at the Church of the Capuchins in Palma de Mallorca, one day before the seventh anniversary of Eduardo Bonnín’s passing and on the same day that the 162nd women’s cursillo began, held from February 5 to 8 at the Sanctuary of Santa Lucía in the town of Mancor de la Vall (Mallorca).
Mr. Pep Adrover reminded us that we were witnessing a historic moment, acting as Episcopal notary and certifying the document in which the diocesan secretariat of Mallorca appears as the acting body, driven by the request of the national secretariats of Portugal (which at that time presided over the OMCC), Italy, and El Salvador.
First step (already achieved): Testifying to Eduardo Bonnín’s reputation for holiness
To initiate the beatification cause of Eduardo Bonnín Aguiló, postulator Mr. Gabriel Ramis informed us that testimonies of his reputation for holiness were needed—that is, whether Eduardo Bonnín is widely recognized among the faithful for his virtues and courage in living his faith as a Servant of God, or whether there are any miracles attributed to him.
For this reason, we provided an address for those wishing to send their personal testimony, duly dated and signed, explaining why they believe Eduardo Bonnín demonstrated an exceptional level of Christian virtues, as well as any daily or great miracle attributed to his intercession.
We had asked you to share your experiences with Eduardo—for example, your personal witness regarding your relationship with him, your most impactful memories, circumstances, accounts of stories he told in person, examples of his holiness, events that illustrate his way of living the faith, his relationship with others, his trust in the Holy Spirit, photos, letters, emails, or documents.
Required details: Date, Full name, Identity document, Diocese, Postal address, Phone number, Email, Signature.
All testimonies had to be sent by mail to: Casa de la Iglesia – Delegación Causa de los Santos.
We encouraged you to share this information with anyone who could contribute a personal testimony regarding Eduardo Bonnín’s reputation for holiness.
Thanks to everyone who helped achieve this first step. Now, as mentioned earlier in this section, we need to prove miracles through the intercession of Eduardo Bonnín.
Signing of the Initiation of the Canonization Process on the life, virtues, and miracles of the Servant of God Eduardo Bonnín Aguiló
On November 12, 2018, we joyfully witnessed the signing of the initiation of Eduardo Bonnín Aguiló’s canonization process.
To share this joy with everyone, we include the transcription of the event in the order of speeches.
Intervention by D. Gabriel Ramis Miquel, postulator of the cause for beatification
«We are about to begin the process regarding the life and virtues in particular, and miracles in general, of the Servant of God Eduardo Bonnín Aguiló.
The cause—bearing in mind that we must distinguish between “cause” and “process”—has already begun because the Bishop has accepted the petition submitted by the postulator on behalf of the Actor.
First steps: The appointment of two theological consultants who must examine all the published and handwritten works of the Servant of God, which is a major task, to determine if they contain anything contrary to faith or morals.
Next, a commission of historians has been appointed to investigate all the archives—thankfully collected in the Eduardo Bonnín Aguiló Foundation—to compile a critical biography.
Once the commission of historians has completed its work and the theological censors have given a positive vote, testimonies will then begin to be heard.
However, before the historians and theologians conduct their work, since there are many firsthand witnesses who knew Eduardo Bonnín and whose testimony is therefore highly valuable, we are bringing forward the process of hearing these testimonies. This is to ensure that, should some of these witnesses pass away in the coming years, their testimonies are not lost. For this reason, the right to advance interviews has been established so that evidence is not lost.
All of this is preceded by the collection of documentation that supports the reputation of sanctity in his life, his death, and after his passing.
Monsignor Grisham, Secretary of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, once told me: “Woe to us if only the canonized were saints—many more are saints.” However, he also asked, “Why do we canonize one person and not another who might even be holier?” The answer: “Because of the reputation of sanctity.”
So, we have the reputation of sanctity, we have the “nihil obstat” from Rome, and we proceed to begin this process».
Intervention by D. Sebastià Taltavull i Anglada, by the Grace of God and the Holy Apostolic See, Bishop of Mallorca
«Having reviewed the request dated January 2, 2018, in which D. Gabriel Ramis Miquel, priest, postulator of the cause for the beatification and canonization of the Servant of God Eduardo Bonnín Aguiló, a lay faithful, on behalf of the Actor of the cause, asks for the initiation of the cause—having obtained the favorable consent of my fellow bishops in our ecclesiastical province, having conducted the necessary inquiries among the faithful of this diocese, having issued an edict on September 14, 2018, and having received the nihil obstat on July 21, 2018—by this document, I accept the petition and decree the initiation of the cause for the beatification and canonization of the Servant of God Eduardo Bonnín Aguiló, lay faithful.
Since I am unable to personally oversee the instruction of the investigation, I appoint Monsignor Jorge Gayá Estelrich as Episcopal Delegate; Reverend D. José Adrover Vallbona as Promoter of Justice; Mr. D. Juan Luís Trasierra Ramírez as Notary; and Ms. Consuelo Villa Carrión as Assistant Notary.
I instruct the Chancellor of the Diocese to inform the officials of the instruction of their appointment so that they may appear on November 28, 2018, at 12:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Palace to participate in the first session of the opening of the instruction and to take the oath to faithfully fulfill their duty and maintain professional secrecy. Issued in Palma on November 12, 2018».
Following this, the present documents were signed by D. Sebastià Taltavull i Anglada, Bishop of Mallorca, and Mosén Jaime Estela Cortés, Chancellor Secretary.
Additionally, during this same event, the various officials of the process signed their respective documents, thereby officially beginning the instruction phase.
As we are well aware of the interest this process has sparked across five continents, we will continue to provide updates on the most significant developments as they occur.
